A computer capable of classroom presentation, computers to type poems and draw or add graphics, AppleWorks (or another word processing and draw program), FireWorks (or another draw and paint program), HyperStudio, PowerPoint.
The purpose of this activity is to introduce students to a variety of types of poetry, help them improve their descriptive skills, and promote the enjoyment of reading and writing poetry.
The first activity is meant to gain the attention of the students and lay the foundation for a study of figurative language and poetry. It is called a Blindfold Walk.
In each of the following learning areas, the same plan will be used. The teacher will introduce the activity and use the overhead projector, computer projection screen, and/or the board to explain the activity and give examples. Students will then be given time to write, share, and publish their poetry. (See PowerPoint Presentation about publishing possibilities.) This works best if teachers are also willing to write and share poetry as well. While studying and practicing the different poetry forms, the word bank will be actively used. Students in partners will make an on-going poetry book in HyperStudio. Each partnership will choose or be assigned a poetry type. When the team's poetry assignment is ready for publication, they will add a card to the class HyperStudio stack. When we have finished the full poetry unit, our HyperStudio stack will also be finished with poems contributed by the entire class. If a teacher does not have HyperStudio, this could be a bound copy of poems instead.
In a whole-class situation, the teacher will ask students to look at their notes again from the Blinkfold Walk. Using the Inspiration software on the computer with the presentation system, students will share some of the interesting language they used and then brainstorm additional descriptive words or phrases that could have been used. These we will post in the room as a word or phrase bank so students can use those words or add to the list. This will be useful as we proceed with the writing of different poetry forms.

Students will work in partners during the Blindfold Walk with the teacher facilitating. In the other activities, the teacher will present to the whole class, and then the students will work individually, in partners, and in small groups. The teacher will facilitate. Students will share poetry aloud with partners, small groups, and occasionally with the whole class.
Students will use a writer's notebook for notes, ideas, and rough drafts, a creative writing folder to keep their creative writing in at all of its different stages. Teacher and students will have computers available for word processing, draw tools, and graphics. The Internet will provide professional and student examples of poetry as well as graphics. It will also provide the opportunity to publish on-line if the students wish. Some of the software that will be used in this lesson plan are: HyperStudio, PowerPoint, Inspiration, AppleWorks 5, and FireWorks.
