CLASS GRADING RUBRIC

Upon completing this section, the student should be able to:

1.  Distinguish between periods and groups, or families if given a periodic table,

2.  Recognize the groups:  alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, halogens, and noble gases.

3.  State the oxidation number of metals with only one oxidation number.

4.  State the oxidation number of non-metals when they end the compound.

5.  Determine the oxidation number of metals with more than one oxidation number in a compound or polyatomic ion.

6.  Distinguish between molecular and ionic substances.

7.  State the formula and charge of selected polyatomic ions.

8.  Name binary compounds in which the metal has only one oxidation number.

9.  Name binary compounds in which the metal has more than one oxidation numbers.

10.  Name ternary compounds when the metal has one, or more than one oxidation number.

11.  Name binary and oxyacids.

12.  Given the name of a substance, write its formula.

13.  State the differences in properties in ionic and molecular compounds.
