Title: Promoting Animal Writes

Grade Level: Intermediate

Description:

In an effort to combine science with writing, this series of lessons was developed to give students an opportunity to write a report on an animal of their choosing. Opportunities are provided to instruct students to utilize 2 or more sources of information to gather facts.

Students:

Approximate Time Required: 2-3 weeks

Gain Attention: The students will view the video Busch Gardens presents Shamu & You Exploring the World of Mammals and Jack Hanna's Animal Adventures. Following the video, students will participate in a "brainstorming" session to generate a list of mammals.

Students participate in most of the activities at their own pace. In collaboration with the Media Specialist, time was set aside in the school media center to use the Encyclopedias for research. Most of the report writing was completed with the assistance of the teacher or classroom aide. Staff also supervised the Internet searches and provided guidance to students in filling out their webs.

Tools:

Computer with Internet connection and printer, word processing program such as ClarisWorks, Inspiration software, access to media center and encyclopedias, clip art software, Harcourt Science books-3rd grade edition.
