Lesson Plan
Title: Marine Vertebrate Multimedia Project
Technology Resource Requirements:
Subject Area(s): Marine Science, Technology
Grade Level: 10-12
Short Description:
Each pair of students in a class will select, and research a different marine vertebrate and produce a multi-media projerct to instruct their peers
Approximate time required: 4 weeks
Gain attention:
Students will view the following presentations to provide introductory information needed to begin their projects:
Sample Hyperstudio marine vertebrate project..
Slides and PowerPoint presentation to introduce project topics.
Tasks:
Learning objectives:
1.Students will increase their marine vertebrate knowledge with information gathered from the internet. Marine Vertebrate Web Sites
2.Students will learn how to use Hyperstudio techniques.
3..Students will design and complete a Hyperstudio stack on a marine vertebrate to present to the class.L
Day 1 View student examples of Hyperstudio projects. View slides of animals they may choose for their projects.
Day 2 View PowerPoint presentation Marine Vertebrates Multimedia Projects. In pairs, they will select a marine vertebrate as research topic--Marine Vertebrate Choices.
Day3-6 After viewing sample projects and making vertebrate choices, students will receive the word processing merge assigning tasks Mar.Vert. Assignment. Next they will use the database Mar. Vert. Database to fill in taxonomy on their animal. Students will use the internet, books, reference CD-ROMs and periodical sources to complete research categories on Mar. Vert. Assignment. Students will be reminded repeatedly to keep a list of usable graphics and resources on this data sheet as they progress. Students will learn tips on using search engines. We will access 5 links as sample websites-- Marine Vertebrate Websites..Students will work in the classroom or Mac Lab/Media Center as needed.
Day 7 Learn Hyperstudio basics--distribute and create storyboards for homework.
Day 8 Continue with Hyperstudio basics and emphasize use of text boxes.
Day 9-15 Introduce Marine Vertebrate Project Rubric at this time since they are familiar with Hyperstudio and will now know what they should include on each card in their stack. Each day students will receive Hyperstudio tips, reminders, and continued assistance by teacher. Students will assist in developing an intra-group rubric to insure each member pulls his weight. When appropriate, introduce Mar. Vert. Pres. Rubric to prepare them for presenting their project to class.
Days 16-20 Student pairs will present their marine vertebrate via their Hyperstudio project to class.
Interactions:
There are usually 35 students in my marine science classes. We have a total of 8 computers in my classroom, 6 student stations connected to server,, 1 teacher station, and 1 laptop. We also have 2 Mac Labs with 30 computers each which are located next to the media center. The project entails seven days of instruction and research, 2 weeks of project creation time, and 1 week of presentation and assessment. Students will save their projects on the school's server so we'll have adequate memory and easy access from both lab and classroom.
Student pairs will use cooperative learning strategies to choose topic, divide tasks, brainstorm and discuss sources for their research both in school and at home. They will consult with teacher, media specialist, technology specialist on resource and project questions. They will list sources and graphics on their data sheets as they progress. They will refer constantly to their rubric to ensure they meet standards in preparing their presentation for their class. Each of the partners will share the computer--one partner/one day, the other partner the next day--keeping track of this on computer sheet each period. The partner who is not on computer will coach, search for information gaps, graphics, and will prepare bibliography on extra computers in labs or in media center next door,
Tools:
Lab with computers with CD-ROM, Hyperstudio, Internet Access via Netscape or Exploreer, Media Center with ample marine science resources
Assessments:
Week One or Day 7 Data sheet will be checked for accuracy
Week Two Storyboard checked over for completeness, accuracy, and design--refer to Mar.Vert. Project Rubric
Week Three and Four Hyperstudio project and presentation to class is graded using Mar.Vert. Project Rubric and Mar. Vert. Pres. Rubric.
Student pairs will assess each other with partner rubrics they have created.
or
1.Partner assessment by rubric
2.Teacher assessment of research, planning (storyboard), project, and presentation to class by rubrics
