Lesson Plan


Title: Florida Native American Groups

Grade Level: Eighth


Short Description:

The students will learn about Florida’s Native American tribes by researching one of the following tribes: Apalachee, Calusa, Tekesta, Timucua,Tocobaga, or the Seminole Indians. In groups, they will create a HyperStudio presentation for their tribe that will include the following topics: geographic location, time period, customs, language, dress, food, tools, housing, accomplishments, and social structure. They will also include a word processing document that describes each card in detail. Finally, the groups will present their creations to the class.

Approximate Time Required: 2 weeks

Gain Attention:

Show HyperStudio presentation of the Timucuan Indians and the Power Point Presentation of the Seminole Indians.

Tasks:

The students will be placed in groups of three, assigned a tribe, and choose which topics (geographic location, time period, customs, language, dress, food, tools, housing, accomplishments, and social structure) each group member will research. Next, the students will research their topics on the Internet using the selected web sites and use the listed books. After researching, they will each create a word processing document that describes each card in detail. The document will consist of one paragraph per card. Next, each student will use HyperStudio and create at least 5 slides. Each slide must contain at least one graphic, text information, and a button. Last, the groups will combine their HyperStudio presentations and present their Florida Native American slide show to the class.

Interactions:

The students will work in groups of three to research on the Internet and in books their selected Florida Native American tribe. Next, they will create a word processing document and a HyperStudio presentation. The groups will present their project to the class.
