SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS:

Strand H: THE NATURE OF SCIENCE

Standard 1: THE STUDENT USES THE SCIENTIFIC PROCESSES AND HABITS OF MIND TO SOLVE PROBLEMS.

Benchmark SC.H.1.3.1 The student knows that scientific knowledge is subject to modifications as new inormation challenges prevailing theories and as a new theory leads to looking at old observations in a new way.

Benchmark SC.H.1.3.2 The student knows that the study of the events that led scientists to discoveries can provide information about the inquiry process and its effect.

Benchmark SC.H.1.3.4 The student knows that accurate record keeping, openess, and replication are essential to maintaining an investigators credibility within the scientific community and society.

Benchmark SC.H. 1.3.5 The student knows that a change in 1 or more variables may alter the outcome of an investigation.

Title: The Role of the Scientific Method in Research Projects

Technology Resource Requirements:

  • Connection to the internet;
  • AppleWorks 5.0 (or 4.0)
  • Microsoft Word - PowerPoint
  • Adobe Illustration/PhotoDeluxe
  • Digital Camera
Subject Area:  Science

Grade level: 6-8

DESCRIPTION:  "Problem Solving Using The Scientific Method"

The scientific method is an orderly and organized way to solve a problem. We will always be curious about how problems can be solved. By using the scientific method to solve our problem, we can organize our curiosity.  There are five steps to the scientific method.  They are:

  • Observe and state a problem.
  • Analyze the problem and form a hypothesis.
  • Test the hypothesis by experimenting.
  • Collect data.
  • Form a conclusion proving or disproving your hypothesis.
The scientific method can be used as the basis for a science fair or a science research project.  This unit will introduce students to the scientific method and
show them examples of application for a science fair project.

Approximate Time Required:  5 days and up

PROCEDURE:

GAIN ATTENTION:  Students brainstorm ideas for science fair projects, focusing on things that are interesting to them. (For some great ideas, click here.)

TASKS:

Students need to become familiar with the Scientific Method.
Students need to select a Science Fair or research topic.

INTERACTIONS:  Students will work together, using the links provided, to get needed information.

TOOLS:  LINKS TO THE INTERNET

ASSESSMENTS:  PRE/POST TEST
