Overview
This unit may be used as a resource for the 4th grade Social
Studies curriculum. There will be lessons that coincide with maps and globes,
Florida economy, Florida history, as well as Florida Government. Students
will work with a number of applications including a multimedia presentation.
Introduction
The students will begin the unit by filling out a KWL chart
(what you Know, what you Want to know, and
what you Learned). This gives the students an opportunity to show what they
know about the state. Sometimes the students may need some ideas to get
started. Once the KWL chart is completed, the students will design license
plates for Florida which depict some characteristic of the state that they
mentioned on their KWL chart. Example.
Where Are We?
This activity is designed to make the students aware of their location in relation to Planet, Continent, Country, State, County and City. Using a variety of maps, show students where they live. The students are to learn the differences between city and state etc..Use the Inspiration Chart to further demonstrate students' location in the world.
An independent practice that can be given to the students to measure understanding is as follows:
County Database
Have students create a database on Florida's counties using information from the text, pgs. 200-201. Example.
Florida Economy
Students will reach chapter 2 which discusses Florida's resources and money making industries. A discussion may bring up more ideas to add to the KWL chart. This will work well with the Expository writing process. Students will be assigned the following prompt after reviewing chapter two.
Florida is special in many ways.
Think about things that make Florida special place.
Now write to explain why Florida is a special place for you.
Florida Government
It is important for students to realize the importance of government and how decisions are made. Use Chapter 8 in the Forida USA book to introduce government. A class activity may be to divide the class into the Legislative branch of governement. Use the Power Point presentation to review the structure of our state government. Putting it Together
The following activity can be done at the end of the year or through the duration of your Social Studies class. The Hyper Studio presentation is a brief review of some key facts that the students learned. Click to download MAC or WIN plug-ins.
