Short Description:
The purpose of this unit is to introduce students to the concept of money. Students will identify a penny, nickel, dime and quarter and their corresponding values. Students will count mixed groups of coins and determine their amount. Students will explore different ways to show like amounts of money.
Approximate Time Required: 2 weeks
Gain Attention:
Begin the unit by reading One Dollar My First Book About Money by Lynette Long followed by a PowerPoint presentation on coins and their values.
Tasks:
Throughout the 2 week unit students will actively explore the concept of money by using plastic coins to show various amounts and to show different combinations of like amounts. There will be direct whole group instruction followed by group and independent practice with manipulatives or work sheets. As part of their daily morning work they will have work sheets that reinforce the instruction from the previous day. During this unit many books that reinforce and support the concept of money will be shared with the class. Centers with games and activities designed to provide additional practice will also be available.
Interactions:
Students will rotate daily in groups among the 4 computers in our classroom to use the different money software on each computer. They will vary their time between working independently and working with a partner. Students will also work in partners or groups to use the games and activities provided. They will use the Hyperstudio presentation as review of the concepts presented. To run it you will need the Hyperstudio plug-in. To download the plug-in, click here first.

Computer(s) and software for students and teacher. Overhead projector and overhead coins. Money stamps. Books about money. Large cardboard coins.
