America's Symbols

To Teachers

The following is my introduction to students. This web site meets the Florida State Sunshine Standards for Time, Continuity and Change (Strand A). This unit was developed for first graders.

Introduction

Is the bald eagle really bald? What was the first name for the Statue of Liberty? What does she hold in her right hand? How many bathrooms are in the White House? Travel through this web site and you will find the answers to these questions and other interesting facts about four of America's symbols of freedom.

Task

Your task for this web site will be to travel to and read about four American symbols. It will take you four days to complete your tour. Each day you will visit a different symbol. Your job will be to discover interesting facts about each symbol and complete the Fact Sheet. On day five, you will draw a picture of the symbol you enjoyed the most. Your drawing must include three facts you learned about your symbol.

What You Will Do

1. You will be assigned a partner by your teacher.

2. You and your partner will click on and print an America's Symbols Fact Sheet. The sheet has four parts. The Fact Sheet will tell you where to visit everyday.

3. You will click on the links to visit famous American symbols and complete the Fact Sheet daily. You may visit the games and puzzles only after completing the Fact Sheet.

4. After visiting the four symbols, complete your own picture and do not forget to include three interesting facts.

5. Print America's Symbols Fact Sheet.

How Will I Be Graded?

1. Did my partner and I work well together?

2. Did I follow directions?

3. Did I answer all the questions on my Fact Sheet?

4. Is my picture neat and did I include details?

5. Did I remember to include three facts about my symbol?

6. Print Rubric and complete.

Conclusion

You have now completed your visit to four of the most important symbols of the United States of America. You can now share your Fact Sheet with your parents or other family members. This summer, when your family is planning their vacation, you might suggest visiting Washington D. C. and exploring other symbols of this country.
