Area Lesson Plans

Day one:
•Introduce concept of area using PowerPoint presentation and exercises within it. •Compare/contrast to perimeter. Discuss possible applications (i.e., carpeting a room).

Day two:
•Use centimeter overhead transparency to create shapes for students to calculate area after review. Have students copy shapes from overhead onto centimeter grid paper and calculate area.

Days three, four, five:
Have students calculate area for given shapes as POD (problem of the day) on paper or using geoboards. Continue doing this at least weekly until all understand how to calculate area. Activities included in the text could also be used as practice.

 

 

Grading Rubric


The student will accurately calculate the area of given shapes.

Exemplary(4) The student will answer 100% correctly.
Accomplished(3) The student will answer 85-99% correctly.
Developing(2) The student will answer 70-84% correctly.
Beginning(1) The student will answer 69% or below correctly.
